He was originally a poet, novelist, and journalist. His early comedy Sous les Toits de Paris/Under the Roofs of Paris 1930 made great use of the new innovation of sound. His other films include Entr'acte 1924, Le Million 1931, A nous la Liberte 1931, Le Silence est d'Or 1947, and Porte des Lilas 1957.
